    • 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
    • Starting point: the Blackfriar Pub
    Register

Our tour will start at outside the Blackfriar Pub, renowned for its Art Nouveau reliefs of jolly friars enjoying grape and grain, which is situated at  the southernmost tip of the ward of Farringdon Within, at 5.30 p.m.

We will finish at Smithfield, near the northern edge of Farringdon Without, at about 7.00 p.m. where we will have drinks – and optional evening meals – at one other of the pubs there - the Butcher’s Hook & Cleaver or the Bishop’s Finger.

The tour, which will be led by one or more, (depending on numbers) guides from the City of London Guide Lecturers’ Association, will take in some of the most interesting locations in the eastern side of our wards.  We will cover Roman London, Medieval land reclamation, Livery Companies, the Dissolution of the Monasteries, Shakespeare, the Great Fire, churches – Wren and other, medical developments and the many grisly events that happened in and around Smithfield – as well as plans for future development.

Drinks and Dinner.  Staying for drinks and/or dinner is entirely optional.  Please book a ticket for dinner if you are planning to stay so that we have an idea of how many places to reserve.

Travel.  The Blackfriar is just over the road from the North entrance to Blackfriars station, with both overground and underground connections, while at Smithfield we are close to the Farringdon Elizabeth Line station entrance and The Barbican Underground station for the journey home.

Early-bird ticket price is £15 until 18 May, £20 afterwards.

    THE THAMES SUMMER PARTY!

Yes, and now for something completely different! And there is no charge for the event, just friends old and new gathering around the banks of Dear Olde Father Thames for a good time at The Old Justice, Bermondsey Wall West, SE16 which abuts Bermondsey Beach, yes a beach with (some!) real sand!

Low tide that day is at 11.11 and the next high tide at 17.15: the pub opens at noon. 10 minutes’ walk from Bermondsey Tube or a 15/20 minute stroll along the River from London Bridge. The pub serves food or you can always bring a picnic for the beach!

Maybe you have ideas for a theme given that it is D-DAY.

    Let us know!

Book the date now and tell your friends and what a great opportunity to introduce the children and grandchildren to the delights of Olde Father Thames.

    VISIT TO WINDSOR CASTLE

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.

    1.00 pm Friday, 3rd July 2026

The tour is a leisurely and enjoyable three-hour stroll and although we hope the weather will not trouble us is largely indoors. There is a café on site but we will be repairing to a local hostelry after the visit, probably The Boatman, but this is not included in the event cost so everyone can do their own thing, eat, drink, be merry or not as they wish! However please confirm if you wish to go to the after event.

BOOK and PAY before 3rd June, 2026

MEMBERS and their GUESTS £37.50 - NON MEMBERS £45

    After 3rd June Members and their guests £42.50 – Non-Members £50.00

Please also book a "ticket" (no additional charge - pay on the day for what you consume) if you intend to come to The Boatman so we can book the appropriate number of tables.

or Email office@farringdonwardclub.org.uk with name, number and type of ticket, whether you wish to join the after party and make payment direct to Metro Bank – 23-05-80 – Farringdon Ward Club No2 – 20342366

Sir David Wootton is - amongst many other things - a former Common Councillor of Farringdon Within, former President of the Farringdon Ward Club and former Lord Mayor.  He remains active in many fields, a true City leader - just look at his Wikipedia entry.

The format of the evening will be a "fireside chat" with our President, David Selves, with a Q&A afterwards.  There will be an opportunity to have a drink and "break bread" - but we are still working on the format and location.

Definitely a date to get into the diary, though!
