  Jamila Robertson

  Another enjoyable opportunity for FWC member to get together and hear from our latest speaker Jamila Robertson (pictured above with President David Selves). Jamila is a FWC member, an entrepreneur and the Founder of Ask Louis, a digital platform which actively helps young people discover careers in Construction and Engineering which is now high up on the Govt’s agenda for young school leavers; Jamila is also a Director at the Centre for the Future of Work.

  ​Jamila stood as a Conservative candidate in the 2024 General Election for Brent East.​

  ​In 2016, Jamila created the Slapp makeup app, so with just a selfie you could instantly find the right products for you; wherever you lived and whenever you wanted. This was such a success and Jamila is very proud of this achievement.

  ​Jamila volunteers in her spare time by speaking in schools and colleges across the country, inspiring young people to become entrepreneurs, go into STECM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Construction and Maths) and take up work experience.

  ​As a former school Governor in two local primary schools and a STEM Academy, Jamila is focused on ensuring young people have access to networks and a range of career possibilities. 

  ​Jamila is a passionate advocate for upskilling those on Universal Credit to empower people back to work so they can use their skills to build the SMEs of the future.

  ​Jamila’s academic background is that she studied Classics at UCL before going on to gain an NCTJ in Newspaper Journalism, and an MA in Fashion Journalism at the London College of Fashion (UAL).

  ​Jamila helps to develop policy with the Centre for Policy Studies and members may have seen her column in CityAM

  There will be no charge for these events, just use the bar and do bring friends!

  A visit to Britain’s oldest brewery

  SHEPHERD NEAME BREWERY

  In the medieval market town of Faversham, the family run brewery has been part of everyday life for more than three centuries. An independent family business with the distinction of being Britain’s oldest brewer. Modernised in the last ten years while remaining true to its traditions the main brewhouse has a minimum batch size of 110 barrels produces 180,000 barrels a year. There is also a state of the art dedicated Small Batch brewery with 15 barrel kit for creating limited edition batches of cask and keg ales.

  The brewery is a ten to fifteen-minute walk from Faversham station through the historic market square and home to Faversham’s Guildhall, on sticks! Trains leave Victoria at ten past and twenty to the hour and journey time on average 70 minutes. Ideally, we need to arrive at the visitor’s centre at 11 Court Street by 10.30am. Bear left out of the station, cross the road at the zebra crossing and turn right into Preston Street. Walk to the bottom of the road through the pedestrianised area. Turn left into Market Street then right at the square and follow Market Place up to Court Street. The brewery will be on your left a little further up the road. Come to the Visitor Centre, 11 Court Street, on the corner of Partridge Lane and Court Street by 10.30am.

  The town is ripe with history including King James II's detention in Faversham in 11^th December 1688, and it is said that on his release he issued a formal proclamation forgiving the people of England their sins while specifically excluding the town of Faversham. While attempting to flee to France during the Glorious Revolution, James II was stopped and captured by local fishermen near Sheerness and brought to Faversham and imprisoned in what is now part of the brewery!

  The event is heavily associated with his humiliation, capture, and personal resentment toward the local inhabitants and fishermen who mistreated him.

  The registration fees for the Treasure Hunt are £50 per team of up to 6 people or £10 per individual.  A complimentary Treasure Hunt t-shirt is included for each participant in the registration fee. All proceeds will support the work of the West Ham United Foundation and the Combined Cadet Force, our two beneficiary charities that help young people develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed as adults.

  The Churchill War Rooms is one of the five branches of the Imperial War Museum.

  The museum comprises the Cabinet War Rooms, a historic underground complex that housed a British government command centre throughout the Second World War, and the Churchill Museum, a biographical museum exploring the life of Winston Churchill.

  Construction of the Cabinet War Rooms, located beneath the Treasury building, began in 1938. They became fully operational on 27 August 1939, one week before Britain declared war on Germany. The War Rooms remained in operation throughout the Second World War, before being abandoned in August 1945 after the surrender of Japan.

  Followed by a visit to the Horse and Guardsman Pub from 5.00pm where you can order food and drink as required at your own expense to round off this enjoyable and fun visit.

  Sir David Wootton is - amongst many other things - a former Common Councillor of Farringdon Within, former President of the Farringdon Ward Club and former Lord Mayor.  He remains active in many fields, a true City leader - just look at his Wikipedia entry.
  
  The format of the evening will be a "fireside chat" with our President, David Selves, with a Q&A afterwards.  There will be an opportunity to have a drink and "break bread" - but we are still working on the format and location.
